Chapter 2 – The Magic Lamp
Jules has finally made a magic lamp that projects stars into his room. But when a strange noise rings out in the middle of the night, he wonders if his lamp is really the solution…

Reading difficulty
Jules is sitting at his desk. He is looking at his drawing: a magic lamp with stars and planets.

"I'm going to transform my room into a starry sky!" he said.

He goes to his workshop and gathers what he needs: lamps, lenses, a small projector and transparent plastic. He cuts out stars and planets.

Her hands carefully assemble the pieces.

"What if I add a button to change the colors?" he whispers.

The hours pass. Her magic lamp is ready!

Evening arrives. Jules turns on his lamp. Thousands of stars appear on the ceiling. Colorful planets float in the air. A Milky Way stretches across the room.

"It's magnificent!" whispers Jules.

He lies down on his bed and looks at the ceiling. The soft light reassures him. The shadows have disappeared.

Jules smiled, proud of himself.

— I have conquered my fear!

He closes his eyes and falls asleep.

But in the middle of the night, a noise echoes in the corridor. Jules gets up and takes his flashlight. He opens the door.

Nothing. Just silence.

He returns to his room.

"My lamp works here, but not in the hallway," he murmured.
Jules takes a new sheet of paper and writes: "MISSION: NO MORE FEAR - PART 2".

He begins to draw up plans for a noise detector.

This time, he is determined not to let fear win.
Jules is determined. He no longer wants to let his fear of the dark ruin his nights.

Sitting at his desk, he looks at the sketch of his magic lamp, the one he drew the day before. Stars, planets, and even a small comet crossing the ceiling… It's perfect.

"If I can transform my room into a starry sky, I won't be afraid anymore," he told himself.

Without waiting, he gets to work.

In his workshop, Jules gathers everything he needs. He takes lamps for soft lighting, lenses to project shapes, a small projector salvaged from an old machine, and transparent plastic. He carefully cuts out stars and planets of all sizes.

His nimble hands assemble the pieces with precision. He tests, adjusts, starts again.

"What if I add a button to change the color of the stars?" he murmured, smiling.

The hours pass without him realizing it. He is focused, passionate about his project.

Finally, after several attempts, her magic lamp is ready. It's magnificent!

Jules places it on his bedside table and eagerly awaits nightfall.
When darkness invaded his room, Jules turned on his lamp.

Instantly, thousands of points of light appear on the ceiling. Stars twinkle softly. Colorful planets float in the air. A small Milky Way stretches across the room like a ribbon of light.

Jules holds his breath.

"It's... magnificent," he whispers.

He lay down on his bed, his eyes fixed on the ceiling. The soft, soothing light reassured him. The menacing shadows had disappeared, replaced by a magical spectacle.

Jules smiled, proud of his invention.

— I did it. I conquered my fear.

He closes his eyes… and falls peacefully asleep.

But something's wrong.

In the middle of the night, a strange noise echoed in the corridor. Jules stiffened. His heart beat faster.

"It's nothing, just the wind... or the cat," he murmured to himself.

He tries to focus on the stars on the ceiling, but his mind keeps returning to the noise.

What if it wasn't the cat? What if it was… something?

He gets up slowly, grabs his flashlight and opens his bedroom door. He shines the light into the hallway.

Nothing. Just silence and darkness.

But he is not reassured.

He goes back to his room and looks at his magic lamp. It works perfectly… but only here, in his room. As soon as he leaves, his fear returns.

"So, my lamp isn't the solution..." he murmured. "I need to find something else."

Jules sits down at his desk and takes a new sheet of paper. At the top, he writes in large letters:

"MISSION: NO LONGER BE AFRAID OF THE DARK – PART 2"
He notes:
Step 1: Understand why noises scare me.
Step 2: Find an invention that explains each noise.

He thought for a moment, then smiled.
— What if I create something that explains noises? Like a noise detector!

Without wasting a second, he begins to draw up the plans. He gathers parts, adjusts components…

The night is still long, but Jules is already feeling better. He has a new challenge to face.

This time, he is determined not to let his fear win.
Jules is determined. He no longer wants to let his fear of the dark ruin his nights. This fear that wakes him with a start, that transforms every shadow into a monster, every creak into danger… No, enough is enough.

Sitting at his desk, he looks at the sketch of his magic lamp, the one he carefully drew the day before. Stars of all sizes, brightly colored planets, and even a small comet streaking across the ceiling, leaving a trail of light behind it… It's perfect. Exactly what he needs.
"If I can transform my room into a real starry sky, I won't be afraid anymore," he told himself with conviction.

Without waiting another minute, he gets to work.

In his workshop, this small space he has set up in his room, Jules gathers all the necessary equipment. He takes lamps to create a soft and comforting light, lenses of different sizes to project precise shapes, a small projector salvaged from an old machine that his father was going to throw away, and transparent plastic from which he patiently cuts stars and planets of all sizes.

His nimble hands assemble the parts with remarkable precision. He tests the positioning of each lens, adjusts the angle of the projector, and starts again when the result does not satisfy him.

"What if I add a button to change the color of the stars?" he murmured, smiling, already excited by this new idea.

He rummages through his drawers and finds a small switch with several positions. Perfect! He integrates it into the electrical circuit he has rigged up.

The hours pass without him realizing it. He is completely absorbed in his project, focused, passionate. When his mother calls him for dinner, he jumps, surprised to see that the sun is already setting outside.

Finally, after several attempts and a few last-minute adjustments, his magic lamp is ready. It's magnificent! Jules delicately takes it in his hands, places it on his bedside table, and waits with feverish impatience for night to fall completely.

When darkness invades his room and the last rays of daylight disappear behind the curtains, Jules turns on his lamp.

Instantly, as if by magic, thousands of points of light appear on the ceiling and walls. Stars twinkle softly, some bright, others more subtle. Colorful planets float in the air: Jupiter with its orange bands, Saturn with its majestic rings, Mars all red. A small Milky Way crosses the room like a shimmering ribbon of light, creating an absolutely marvelous effect.

Jules holds his breath, amazed by his own creation.

"It's... magnificent," he whispers, almost intimidated by the sight.

He lay down on his bed, his eyes fixed on the ceiling. The soft, soothing light deeply reassured him. The menacing shadows that usually filled his room had vanished, replaced by a magical spectacle that completely transformed the atmosphere of the room.

Jules turns the knob he installed. The stars change color: first blue, then purple, then gold. It's magic.

Jules smiled, incredibly proud of his invention.

"I did it. I conquered my fear," he murmured with satisfaction.

He closes his eyes, soothed by the soft light of his starry sky… and falls peacefully asleep.

But something's wrong.

In the middle of the night, a strange noise echoed in the corridor. A dull creak, followed by a slight squeak./>
Jules stiffened in his bed. His heart began to beat faster. His hands gripped the blanket.

"It's nothing, just the wind... or the cat," he whispers to himself to reassure himself.
He tries to focus on the stars on the ceiling, on their soothing light, but his mind keeps returning to the noise. Was it really the cat? Can the wind make that kind of sound?

What if it wasn't the cat? What if it wasn't the wind? What if it was… something else?

His imagination runs wild despite himself. Old fears come galloping back.
He remained motionless for a few minutes, his ear alert, but silence returned. Yet, he could not fall back asleep.

Finally, he slowly got up, grabbed his flashlight from the shelf, and carefully opened his bedroom door. The hallway was plunged into darkness. He shone the beam of his flashlight in all directions.

Nothing. Just silence and oppressive darkness.

But he is not reassured. The anxiety is still there, lurking deep in his gut.

He goes back to his room and closes the door. He looks at his magic lamp, which continues to project its stars onto the ceiling. It works perfectly… but only here, in his room. As soon as he sets foot in the hallway, as soon as he leaves this protected space, his fear returns with a vengeance.

"So, my lamp isn't really the solution..." he murmured, disappointed but clear-headed. "I need to find something else. Something more... universal."

Jules sits down at his desk. He turns on his small work lamp and takes a new sheet of paper. At the top, he writes in large, clear letters:
"MISSION: NO LONGER BE AFRAID OF THE DARK – PART 2"

He draws a line below and methodically notes:
- Step 1: Understand why noises scare me.
- Step 2: Find an invention that explains each noise.

He thought for a long time, his chin resting on his hand. Then, suddenly, his face lit up.

"What if I create something that explains noises?" he thought excitedly. "Like a noise detector! A device that picks up sounds and tells me where they come from and what causes them!"

The idea is brilliant. If Jules knows exactly which object makes which noise, he won't need to imagine monsters or terrifying creatures anymore. It will simply be: "Ah, that's the living room window creaking" or "Ah, that's the cat walking in the hallway."

Without wasting a second, he begins sketching the plans for his new prototype. He scribbles diagrams, jots down ideas, and calculates the components he will need: a microphone to capture sounds, a small screen to display information, perhaps even a triangulation system to precisely locate the source of the noise…

He mentally gathers the parts he has in his workshop, adjusts the components in his head…

The night is still long, but Jules already feels better. Much better. He has a new challenge to take on, a new project that excites him.

This time, he is determined not to let his fear win. He will understand it, analyze it, and find a concrete solution.

Because that's what he does best: invent.
